This 2021 collection leans into the older and more solemn end of the repertoire rather than chasing sleigh bells and novelty, which is the right instinct. There's a reason Christmas Eve is the specific night in the title, that hush before the morning, family gathered, the world briefly quiet. The record aims squarely at that feeling and mostly hits it.

Carol of the Bells arrives with the full choral machinery running, all cascading counterpoint and gathering urgency, while Silent Night is delivered almost too plainly, and lands harder for it. In the Bleak Mid-Winter gets the treatment Christina Rossetti's words deserve, unhurried and genuinely cold. Christmas 1915 is the outlier and the record's emotional centre, telling the story of the wartime truce when soldiers on both sides stopped shooting long enough to sing, sung here without a hint of sentimentality.
